Harlem Renaissance

Overview

The Worcester Art Museum from 2002-2003 celebrated the artistic triumph of African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance and in the decades that followed with paintings, sculptures, and illustrated books by Aaron Douglas, William H. Johnson, Jacob Lawrence, Beauford Delaney and many others. In the vibrant environment of Harlem in the 1920s and ’30s, African-American artists, writers, and musicians experimented with themes of everyday life, religion, New York City, and Africa.
