Large Bear

Tom Otterness

Overview

Shortly after September 11, 2001, Alturas Foundation joined in collaboration with the New York City Downtown Alliance to install contemporary sculpture in the Downtown area. Artworks by acclaimed artists including Botero, Louise Bourgeois, Chuck Close and Tom Otterness, served as symbols of the City’s resilience and drew people working and visiting back to the Downtown area. Alturas Foundation loaned Large Bear, a nine-foot bronze sculpture created by Tom Otterness, for installation across from the South Ferry Terminal. Large Bear greeted commuters daily as they exited the Staten Island Ferry and welcomed visitors as they toured Battery Park.
